Class and Journals on the Chalk Cliffs

It seems like the clouds are closer to the land here in England, and it makes for very dramatic skyscapes. We walked up, up, and up over the green turf to the stone cross on the hilltop, and the sun streamed through the brilliantly edged clouds behind. Huge cloud shadows moved over the wrinkled sea half a thousand feet below; seabirds shrieked as they wheeled out from the cliffs hundreds of feet beneath us. (1997)

The Yorkshire Dales

Malham is a pretty little village in the Dales where we stay only one night before our first long trek over the Pennine Way in Yorkshire. My own literary association to this area is the James Herriot veterinarian series beginning with "All Creatures Great and Small."

Malham Cove is just a mile up the path, a nice walk after supper. To see photos of the top of this large limestone formation, see the blog from 2007.

Derwentwater

Chris, John and I took the launch (water taxi) out on the lake. I used to view romantic paintings as hopelessly fantastical and improbable until seeing Derwentwater under scudding clouds and afternoon slanted sun. One photo from today, with the hill in shadow and filtered golden light on the trees, looks just like a landscape by one of the most improbable romantic painters. (2003)
